Skip Hire – Everything You Need To Know About Hiring A Skip
If you are looking to renovate a property, transform a room, change the look of your business premises or just have a general cleanout, you’re bound to create potentially unmanageable amounts of waste.
It’s important to both other residents in the area and the environment that waste is disposed of accurately and effectively.
Depending on your experience with projects that would require a skip and with so many options available, you may not know what to choose. We are here to guide you through all the questions you have, and make sure you get the right skip for your needs.
What is the purpose of my skip hire?
First of all, ask what it is you need the skip for. Skips are charged by the cubic yard/meter and the larger the skip, the lesser the cost per cubic yard/meter. If you are emptying out a loft or part of your office, maybe you only need a small skip, however, if you are completing a full home renovation, the chances are you need the largest skip you can get your hands on – or two!
What can I put into a skip?
It’s important to understand what can go into a skip to prevent incorrect disposal of waste which could cause environmental issues. As a general rule, most materials can go into the skip: wood, metal, sand, plastic, drywall, soil, and concrete. You can also dispose of packaging including cardboard and polystyrene.
Hazardous materials are not allowed to go into a skip, this includes asbestos, paint, fluorescent tubes, gas canisters, oil, computer monitors and old television sets. These need to be disposed of separately, however, that is something that we can help with, should you require it.
What size skip do I need?
Once you have determined what you need the skip for and the amount of waste you think you will produce, you should have a better idea of what size you need.
We always recommend over-estimating for the size of skip you need. Rubbish takes up a lot more space than you might expect and the last thing you need is having to pay additional costs to hire a second skip.
Below is a guideline on sizes and the amount of bags of rubbish you can dispose of.
Other points to consider when considering the size is that you can only fill the skip up to a certain point before a fine may be incurred and it also must fit into the space you are hoping to store it.
Where should I store my skip?
You are able to put your skip anywhere on your private property, provided our driver can access the location, however, you must be certain where you want it.
We encourage you to think about a couple of things when considering where to put your skip:
It is also worth noting that if you plan on keeping the skip away from your property, say, on the road outside – you will require a permit to do so. Without a skip hire permit in place prior to the delivery, you can be fined.
Permits are usually issued by the council and take a few days to arrange so ensure you keep this in mind when planning.
How much will it cost me to hire a skip and how long can I hire it for?
The price of a skip varies depending on the size you require and would need to be discussed with us, however, the cost usually covers a 2 week period with delivery and collection included.
Collection dates can be scheduled to suit you and usually, we can collect within a few days of your request. If you need your skip gone by a certain date, we ask that you give us some notice to get this arranged for you.
If you think your project is going to take longer than a couple of weeks, again we encourage you to let us know at the earliest opportunity so that we can arrange the hire for a longer period.
What happens to skip rubbish?
Our main aim is to protect the environment as much as possible which is why disposing of rubbish correctly is of the highest importance to us.
All of the waste we collect on behalf of you, the customer, will be processed at our own fully licenced transfer station. The rubbish is then unloaded, separated and sorted. Depending on the different waste types, the material will either be recycled, sent to a waste energy facility or taken to be disposed of efficiently.
