Where Can We Place Your Skip? The Ultimate Placement Guide

So, you’ve decluttered the garage, gutted the kitchen, or finally tackled the "jungle" in the back garden. The skip is booked—but where exactly is it going to sit?
Choosing the right spot for your skip isn't just about convenience; it’s about safety and staying on the right side of the law. To help your project run smoothly, we’ve put together this quick guide on skip placement.
1. Private Property: Your Driveway or Garden
The easiest place to put a skip is on your driveway or garden. If you have a driveway or a solid patch of private land, we can usually drop it right there.
Permission: Since it’s your land, you don’t need any external permits.
The "Shared" Factor: If you live in a property that has a shared area you wish for the skip to go in you must obtain their written permission before the skip arrives. Most landlords or housing associations have specific rules about where heavy containers can sit to avoid damaging communal areas or blocking access. This also includes in residential carparks where the spaces are not labelled and grass areas not within 1 specific properties boundary.
Logistics: Although all of our drivers are highly trained and regularly completing skip work, there are just some places we are unable to get a skip. The access leading up to where you would like the skip must be at-least 9ft wide at the narrowest point, this will need to be significantly wider if we are unable to gain straight access. Some skips are able to go over walls or small hedges, however if this is your only option it would be recommended to call prior to delivery to discuss this. Some skips may be to heavy or large to be put over walls.
Top Tip: Skips are heavy! If you’re worried about your driveway, laying down some sturdy pieces of timber can help protect the surface.

2. On the Roadway (Public Highway)
Don't have a driveway? No problem. We can often place the skip on the road outside your property. However, this requires a Council Permit.
We Handle the Paperwork: You don’t have to deal with the council directly. As your waste provider, we apply for the permit on your behalf.
Lead Time & Cost: Please note that councils can require up to a 7-day lead time to process these applications. There is also an additional cost for the permit, which can vary by company and area.
Safety Equipment: For all roadside skips, we provide the necessary safety lights and cones to ensure the skip is visible to traffic. Please note that while these are provided by us, should they go missing or be damaged during the hire period they may be chargeable to the customer.
The Fine Print: Please be aware that permit charges are non-refundable. While we do our best to facilitate the process, permits are not always guaranteed due to factors beyond our control such as sudden roadworks or specific local authority restrictions.
3. The "No-Go" Zones
There are a few places where we strictly cannot place a skip, even if it seems convenient for your project:
Council Verges: It is illegal to place skips on grass verges owned by the council. This protects underground utilities and prevents damage to public green spaces.
Opposite or Near Junctions: Just like the rules of the road for parking, we cannot place a skip opposite or within proximity of a junction. This is a critical safety measure to ensure visibility for other drivers.
Narrow Road: To ensure emergency vehicle access it is not always possible to get a permit down a narrow road as we also need to ensure everyone’s safety. This is at the council’s discretion.
Blocked Access: We cannot drop a skip where it blocks a neighbour’s driveway, a fire hydrant, or a designated "No Parking" zone.
Manhole Covers: To avoid expensive damage or collapsed drains, we cannot place the skip directly over manhole covers or drainage points.
Delivery Day Checklist
Before our driver arrives, just double-check:
Width: Is your gate or driveway wide enough for a large HGV? (Usually at least 9 feet).
Obstructions: Are there low-hanging branches or power lines that might get in the way of the skip loader’s arms?
Clearance: Is there enough space for the truck to pull in and out safely?
Please ensure that the drop-off point is clear and accessible. If our driver arrives and is unable to drop or collect the skip due to obstructions (like parked cars or locked gates) a wasted journey may apply.
Still unsure if your spot is suitable? Give us a call! We can chat through your layout or even look at a photo to make sure your skip delivery goes off without a hitch.
